With all school buses manufactured under D 250 standards (required specs i.e. how many exterior lights are required and where they are must be mounted) it stands to reason that the electronic technology age is here to stay. New C2 buses are Thomas made with a Freightliner chassis and taken this route to the maximum.

They have incorpoarted multi-plex wiring to improve communication and handle more add-on operating systems that seem to increase every year. Heated mirrors and stop gates (an arm that extends out from the front bumper when unloading passengers for highway crossing safety) are mandatory and must be operational at all times. It is an instant rejection when performing a motor vehicle inspection.

The electronic systems are controlled by modules that read signals and and commands by the driver to run the bus. Dash switches have their own designated resistance that the modules read tio tell which operation to implement like wipers or the air horn. Dash switches can be swapped around anywhere on the dash since there is no two switches alike.

To troubleshoot the C2 buses the laptop is required where you can go online with the unit serial number and look inside each module using a template and actually run a test to operate switches and check circuits for faults. The days of hard wiring and basic 12 volt electrical systems are long gone as engineering concepts have truly developed easier and faster designs for todays equipment.

It's been a busy summer (who doesn't have a busy summer?)Since everyone is still running in the maintenance dept. there has been a steady run on automotive /trailer repairs. The buses are always requiring work but most of it is the smaller equipment. That means putting on the "what is priority" cap. There have been a lot of recalls to catch up on. For instance, the Freightliner C2 has a brake switch that is half electrical and half air valve. It was assembled with a grease compound that caused internal sticking of the actual stop light switch. The brake switch had to signal the control module to release the spring brakes. Since the switch would not make contact the spring brakes would not release. I know...Oh Joy! There is a way of bypsassing the electrical system but it's a hassle at the best of times. We had one bus that got stuck st a busy intersection because the driver needed to apply the springs for a moment to check something. After scrambling to rescue the bus we decided to change the valve on our own. Later the recall came about and the date code had to be checked. If it was within the faulty time frame replacement was necessary, free of charge. It all eventually gets done. I hope everything is going well in your part of the world and thanks for being part of this group.

Hi every body I`m having a prob. with one of buses it is a 06 international with a vt 365. It would not start but I found the ecm relay bad but now it will start after it runs a bit and warms up it dies when I try to hook up the laptop it says check volts to dig. port could this be the ecm shortin out after it warms up. I followed the flow chart I found on bus isis. Thats how I found the bad ecm relay.

Could you have a problem in your J1939 wiring? It does all the communicating between modules. If you kill the engine hooking up the laptop then there could be something wrong there.

We had a Heavy Duty Tech School student start in our shop for his practicum. He will stay for a month and learn from all of the techs in our shop. He's 19 years old and he reminds me of when I started out in the trade. I added up all the years of experience combined in our shop and it came to just under 150 years!

Sounds like a great trip! I'm saddened that IC decided to retire the DT466. I guess it was an emissions issue. We have a bus with the Maxxforce 6 Liter. It's proving to be a good runner.

yea i was sad to here the Dt466 was retired. i was wondering have you had any problems with the 6 liter maxxforce yet? we just bought 7 busses with the 6 liter i was wondering how they hold up?

We have one only and just replaced the air compressor under warranty. It's a Bendix so unrelated. So far it has stood up very well. It's on a hill run every day.

Just got back from a 2 week vacation. Well, not really a full time vacation since deciding to renovate the bathroom. The plumbing is different as well as the entire fit and finish of the new tub. "measure twice cut once!" Lately in the shop we've been having wiring problems with several of our 2006 C2 buses. In behind the front driver's side fender the wiring has been corroding or rubbing through and causing lights to stay on and other systems to come on and off even when the key is shut off. If you own a C2 in that era then I would check the wiring around that fender area running to the module bolted on top of the fender.

This week involved a head gasket on a Cummins ISB, Motor Vehicle Inspections, a rear brake job and of course lots of servicing. One problem of note was a Freightliner conventional (C2) that had the rear exit door alarm staying on as well as some lights and the transmission would kick out of gear. Luckily the driver noticed this occurring after hitting a rough road. First thought is ...wiring! Yes that's a sure sign of a wire touching ground or creating an open circuit. When the problem is evident the quick way to troubleshoot is go along the frame and shake the wrg harness and maybe you might find the problem area when something changes. Sure enough the harness along the firewall was rubbing on a support bracket and caused a short circuit.

12V Wiring..Without a schematic it's really frustrating. We had a bus that had a cancel switch for the stop gate that did not work. What this switch does is when the operator throws on his loading lights during a stop and wants cancel the stop gate (located at the front bumper-swings out to block kids from running out in front of the bus into traffic)there is a dash switch that cancels the gate. This switch was not working and wwe got the wiring diagram no problem but it showed 2 relays when in fact the bus had 3 relays. After hooking up with Thomas & Freightliner support and spending several hours tracing splices and switches it boiled down to just switching a wire to another harness. This was really fishy (pure luck). In this case I would have given anything for the proper wrg. schematic (well, almost anything...)

Yeah tell me all about it had 98 Inter/blue bird I could not find a body schematic from international or blue bird just for the student lights I got it fixed but it took me a bit to get it done

Hi Gang, Sorry I haven't been around much, other things to clear up. I will try harder to be more interactive. I appreciate you all joining the group. I just made a new post about our International hybrid bus that was down for a while because of defective batteries. The new improved battery pack (Lithium Ion) has really made a huge difference with power and holdback.
