This is Step 2 after you have installed and seated the Cat 3116 Injector. All six injectors are connected to a rack that is hooked to the governor which senses operator throttle and engine loads to determine how much fuel and rack travel to allow. The governor has a fuel setting and maximum rpm settings that protects the engine from being over-fueled.
The synchronization must be checked on injectors that have been remove or replaced.
Here are the steps to take:
1. Remove rocker arms for injector #3 since we replaced that injector in this case. Doing this makes access much easier to the injector racks and setting up the tools.
2. The injector hold downs must be installed to compress the injector springs and allow movement of the fuel rack.
3. Remove the fuel shutdown solenoid to allow free movement of the rack.
4. Remove rocker arms for #1 injector. This injector has been pre-set (non-adjustable) from the factory and all the remaining 5 injectors are synchronized to #1.
5. The #1 injector must be calibrated using the Cat Tools. All this does is set the proper parameter when checking the remaining 5 injectors. A 3.50 mm block is inserted between the injector rack on #1 injector & no fuel position.
6. The dial indicator checks the #1 calibration and the injector to be checked.
7. The movement of the #3 injector rack must read 3.50 mm (+ or - .02 mm)
8. This will assure that the injector to be set is synchronized to #1 injector. You can imagine if the synchronization was way off on one or two injectors how rough the engine would run since the rack moves all the injector racks together connected to the Governor linkage.
